pub in conwy, north wales

the original, and the best

The Groes Inn’s well-groomed pub is a relaxed affair, popular with locals and guests alike. As well as a changing roster of regional beers, tried and tested favourites from award-winning brewery JW Lees, you’ll find our very own Dragon’s Fire special blend of ale on tap, alongside a tempting selection of fine wines and classic tipples.

The Groes Inn is proudly the first licensed house in Wales, (1573) and our bar is everything you’d like from a traditional Welsh pub: rustic and cosy in equal measures with a roaring fire and a very hearty menu. There are also tables outside for sun-blessed days. The Groes Inn prides itself on being a place where “old world” charm and character and modern attention seems to come together in a rather handsome way.

Please note that we used to close the Inn on Sundays and Mondays but, due to popular demand, we are now OPEN ALL WEEK!

Well-behaved hounds are welcome in some parts of the bar and in the gardens.

DRAGON’S FIRE – OUR OWN LOCALLY-BREWED ALE

Popular with locals and guests from further afield, our well-groomed bar is one of Wales’ best watering holes. As well as a changing roster of regional beers, you’ll find our own special blend of Dragon’s Fire. This tasty bitter is guaranteed to put fire in your belly.

This all-malt cask ale with a citrus aftertaste is moreish indeed, achieved with natural ingredients – an amber ale with a clean, dry taste which is full of depth and character. Bursting with flavour, Dragon’s Fire is an all malt cask ale we’re very proud of; so be sure to try some for yourself and let us know what you think!

OUR FINE WINES

As the first licensed house in Wales, you’d expect fine wine to be a priority at The Groes Inn, and you wouldn’t be far wrong.

That said, there’s nothing stuffy, old-fashioned or pretentious about our handpicked wine list. Naturally you’ll find a dapper selection of the time-honoured favourites – Burgundies and Clarets, for example – but these sit comfortably alongside some no-nonsense rising stars from the New World.

All are equally worth tasting, just give us a shout if you’d like a personal recommendation to match your meal.
